WORKING FROM HOME, ON DESKTOPS AND LAPTOPS
Ergonomics refers to the engineering and design of products and processes to
reduce human error, increase productivity, and enhance safety and comfort.
A Good environment leads to better outcomes eventually.
Working from home ergonomics addresses challenges that have to do
-with body posture, workspace at home and gadgets utilities
Bad office ergonomics can cause the following problems:
-Eye strain
-Headaches and migraines
-Back injuries (Coccydynia)
-Musculoskeletal disorders
-Stiff neck and cervical
-Tendon issues
-Joint problems
So, irrespective of the location, workers must create a space that helps ensure
engagement and efficiency and overcome these hurdles. This brings the main
importance of Ergonomics for IT professionals who are working from home, and
here are some tips that can solve the hurdles.
TIP No. 1: Seat Arrangements
To give full spine and shoulder support, sit back in chair ensuring lower back
support. Arm rest of the chair should be close to the body. Leg should not be
folded behind the base of the chair ensuring proper chair height so that legs
reaches the floor comfortably.
TIP No. 2: Keyboard Arrangements
Keyboard and mouse should be on the same level as the arm on the table. Your
hand need not be raised form the armrest to reach the keyboard. Keyboard
height should not be raised to maintain the wrist angle. A keypad and mouse
rest should be used and an external keyboard can be used with laptops.
TIP No. 3: Monitor Arrangements
Straight ahead and tilted back by 15 °. A center of the monitor atleast 8 inches
below the eye level. Atleast 60 cm distance should be maintained from the
monitor and average font size should be three times the working distance.
TIP No. 4: Lighting Arrangements
Indirect lighting is the best for desktop workings to minimize glare. To reduce
excessive reflects and glare windows should not be behind or in front of the
monitor. Monitor should be angled away from the light reflections caused by
overhead tube lights. Increase the chair height to reduce the reflections from
light on to the face. Drape the windows fully before working and use a wisor or
antireflection screens.
Take a break for 20 seconds from every 20 minutes of near work by looking 20
feet away. Follow frequent blinking average 15 times per minute.
